Fall is here to stay, and winter is on its way. Many people put a lot of miles on their vehicles over the winter and fall, so it’s a good idea to complete an oil change before the weather gets to hairy. Regular and consistent oil changes are necessary for a vehicle’s performance and longevity. One way to ensure that you change your oil often enough is to change it every season.
In light of the new season, here’s everything you need in order to change your oil:
New Oil Filter
New Oil
Lots of Rags
Ramp
Oil Catch Pan
Correctly-Sized Socket Wrench
Clothes you don’t mind getting ruined
Cardboard
Once you’ve assembled all of your supplies, the process is rather simple. You’ll need to put your vehicle up on the ramp, and make sure the emergency brake is engaged. If your vehicle was cold prior to this, let it run for a few minutes or so (not too long, you don’t want to burn yourself). Oppositely, you need to let the engine cool down if it’s hot.
Next, you’ll want to place your cardboard under the vehicle (so you don’t hurt yourself and get stray oil on the ground), and place your catch pan under the oil drain.
It’s important that you have the properly sized wrench for the nut that holds back the oil. Once you loosen and remove this nut, the oil is going to start to come out, quite quickly. Let all of the oil drain out, and wipe up an excess. Make sure you replace this nut before you add new oil.
After this, you need to remove your old filter, and replace it with the new one. Wiping some fresh oil on the seal of the new filter will help with the bond. It’s best to hand tighten your new filter. You want to make sure it’s very secure, but you will eventually need to take it off again.
After this all you need to do is add the oil. It’s a good idea to run the engine again after you add the oil, and check the level again. Once you’ve done all this, you’ve changed your oil, and are ready for the season.
